My challenges
Hi readers, today I wanted to share my challenges that I have faced and how I overcame them.
During the production of my music video, one of the minor challenges was working with iMovie. Although I have used iMovie in the past and feel confident with it, it still has some limitations compared to more advanced editing software. Certain transitions and effects that could have made my narrative even stronger were harder to create. However, I focused on editing techniques such as cross-dissolves, match cuts, and smooth fades to keep the visual storytelling engaging and emotional. By applying these techniques carefully, I was able to maintain continuity and support the nostalgic mood I wanted to convey.
Another challenge I faced was the difference in quality across my footage. Since I used personal clips recorded at different times and on different phones, there was a lack of visual consistency in lighting, colour, and framing. This could have impacted the overall aesthetic and verisimilitude of my music video. To solve this, I used colour grading tools available in iMovie to match the tones as much as possible and adjusted the brightness and contrast. I also thought carefully about the mise-en-scène of each clip to make sure the emotional meaning stayed strong, even if the technical quality varied.
Finally, audience feedback played a big role in improving my final product. I showed early edits of the music video to friends who fit into my target audience of teenagers and young adults. By applying reception theory, I understood how different viewers might interpret the emotional message. Their feedback helped me spot small issues with pacing and emotional impact, and I made improvements to strengthen the preferred reading of my video. Overall, despite small technical challenges, I was able to create a final product that remained true to my vision and appealed emotionally to my audience.
